Back to School in Crested Butte Colorado

The malls have emptied of teenagers, the stores are filled with school supplies, and the mountain bikers are rallying for the first ever high school mountain bike league. It must be back to school time in Crested Butte, Colorado.

Math teacher and member of the Alpine Orthopaedics Cycling Team, Torrey Carroll, was inspired after his own high school experience left him wanting an outlet for his love of mountain biking in a high school organization. While Carroll is spearheading the Mountain Biking Team at Crested Butte Community School, across town, fellow mountain-biking enthusiast Matt Kuehlhorn is leading the mountain biking team for Gunnison High School. Kuelhorn is just as passionate to offer this opportunity to the children of Gunnison. He says, “I want everyone from never-evers to kids that have raced or done a tremendous amount of biking. I don’t want a lack of resources as a reason not to join.”

It's this same forward-thinking and mutual respect for students and teachers that makes the education system in Crested Butte so successful. The Crested Butte Community School, serving grades K-12 in the Gunnison Watershed School District, is among the few public schools in Colorado to receive a GreatSchools Rating of 9 out of 10.

Parents also consistently rate the school based on principal leadership, teacher quality and parent involvement. The school has very high expectations for its students and it shows. Its not uncommon for graduates to attend schools like Duke, University of Michigan, and George Washington.

So yes, it is back to school time, but that doesn't mean that the kids have to be unhappy their summer is over. Live Music from the Base of Mt. Crested Butte, Colorado

A six year member of Elton John's Band, John Jorgensen is sought after by the very best - Barbara Streisand, Bonnie Raitt, and Earl Scruggs to name a few. To round out the quartet is Violinist Jason Anick, Bass Player Simon Planting, Guitarist Doug Martin and Drummer Rick Reed.

Dirty Dozen Brass Band
